7/7/2023 0 Comments Madhuri shekar evil eye![]() In October 2018, Hulu started carrying the still-ongoing series Into the Dark, a monthly-installment anthology of low-budget, feature-length Blumhouse horror films, each with a loose seasonal theme. ![]() Welcome to the Blumhouse is the latest attempt by the successful, largely horror-focused media company Blumhouse Productions to showcase talented filmmakers with offbeat, perhaps-not-yet-ready-for-the-big-screen ideas. And on the ground, next to a garage containing a blood-stained car, a sullen family sits around a dining-room table. ![]() The second floor is Evil Eye, and has Indian decor behind a grisly tableau featuring a knife-wielding woman and a corpse. Below that is the movie Black Box, with a man receiving a bizarre medical treatment while a young girl sits on a sofa nearby. ![]() The top floor represents the movie Nocturne, with a young woman sitting at a piano while a ghostly figure floats by the window. The poster for Amazon’s new film series Welcome to the Blumhouse features a picture of a literal house: a four-story family home, with each story occupied by, well, a story. ![]()

![]() If a man (or an era) sees the buttocks as the center of female seductive power, how does one describe and define the particularity of that erotic orientation? He improvised an answer: brutality, high spirits, the shortest road to the goal, a goal that is all the more exciting for being double. ![]() Indeed, Alain said to himself, even in mid-coitus the length of the thighs endows woman with the romantic magic of the inaccessible. This provoked him to reflect: if a man (or an era) sees the thighs as the center of female seductive power, how does one describe and define the particularity of that erotic orientation? He improvised an answer: the length of the thighs is the metaphoric image of the long, fascinating road (which is why the thighs must be long) that leads to erotic achievement. He was captivated, captivated and even disturbed: it was as if their seductive power resided no longer in their thighs, their buttocks, or their breasts but in that small round hole at the center of the body. He observed the young girls: every one of them showed her naked navel between trousers belted very low and a T-shirt cut very short. It was the month of June, the morning sun was emerging from the clouds, and Alain was walking slowly down a Paris street. ![]() ![]() Through such an examination of the character of Hilda, I attempt to delineate Said’s ambivalent relationship towards feminist politics. In this paper, I will limit my analysis of Said’s attack on patriarchy by discussing his representation of his mother. ![]() ![]() Said’s focus on his gendered identity in Out of Place nuanced my understanding of the hegemonic structure of the institutions of patriarchy, and I came to see that patriarchy could be equally dislocating to its male subjects as it is for women. This gesture resonated deeply with my own feminist political position on existing family structures as oppressive units that attempt to control and undermine women’s roles in society. Said’s focus on his family was a deliberate opening up of the structure of the Arab household, as he attests in the preface to the Arabic translation of the book. ![]() I did not find much of Palestine, but I did read an intimate narrative of an Arab boy’s coming of age. I chose to read Edward Said’s memoir Out of Place expecting to find an alternative history of Palestine from one of the most ferocious fighters for the Palestinian cause. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here Maynard chronicles his experiences -good and bad - as one year becomes three, what began as a casual adventure gradually transforms, and a life's purpose comes sharply into focus. ![]() As a 26-year-old Tik Maynard faced a crossroads not unlike other young adults, and decided to spend the next year as a 'working student'. What began as a casual adventure gradually transforms, and a life's purpose comes sharply into focus. Here Maynard chronicles his experiences - good and bad - and we follow along as one year becomes three. In the horse industry, working students aspire to become professional riders or trainers, and willingly trade labour for hands-on education. The son of prominent Canadian equestrians, Maynard decided to spend the next year as a 'working student'. A university graduate and modern pentathlete, he suffered both a career-ending injury and a painful breakup, leaving him suddenly adrift. In 2008, 26-year old Tik Maynard faced a crossroads not unlike that of other young adults. An entertaining and inspiring autobiography. ![]() ![]() Instead of being a third category, or a period of confusion, oscillation, and experimentation, as is often supposed, bisexuality, in her theory, reveals human sexuality to be a continuum, a process of growth and transformation. ![]() A Harvard professor of English, she argues that bisexuality can be a mature, adult, sustainable way of living one's sexual life. This sets Kate on a collision course with her past, because John Quinn, an expert on serial killers for the FBI, is also helping with the case. Kate Conlan works for the police as a witness advocate, and she is called in to help when there is a witness to one of the cremator’s grisly deeds. Even apart from the violence, the book remains flawed.Īshes to Ashes is the tale of a brutal serial killer – dubbed “the cremator” by the press – who tortures women to death and then burns their corpses. In assigning a grade, I tried as best I could to separate my feelings about the violence in the novel from my over all opinion of the book. However, I realize that some readers may be better able to handle this book’s brutal scenes. Tami Hoag’s Ashes to Ashes one of the most extraneously violent, lurid books I have ever read – so violent that I really couldn’t enjoy it. Just as every reader has a preferred level of sensuality, every reader also has a certain threshold for violence. ![]() 7/6/2023 0 Comments A Needful Heart by J.M.
